ù-, as a prefix or a modifier meaning "first" or "beginning," is useful, as shown in these examples:

This colloquial connective indicates the completion of an action or event that is followed by another action or event. Its meaning is close to -¤¤/Àº ÈÄ¿¡.
- Àú³áÀ» ¸Ô°í ³ª¼ ½Å¹®À» Àоî¿ä.
=> After eating dinner, I read newspapers.
- ÀÐ°í ³ª¼ ¼÷Á¦¸¦ ÇØ¿ä.
=> After reading, I do my homework.
- ¼÷Á¦¸¦ ´Ù ÇÏ°í ³ª¼ Ä£±¸¿¡°Ô Àüȸ¦ °É¾î¿ä.
=> After doing all the homework, I call my friend on the phone.

-°Å³ª indicates two or more events or actions. -(ÀÌ)³ª indicates two or more alternative items.

=> At noon, students were either eating or talking with friends.
- ÁÖ¸»¿¡´Â Ä£±¸¸¦ ¸¸³ª°Å³ª ¿µÈ¸¦ º¼ °Å¿¹¿ä.
=> I'll either get together with my friend or go to the movies this weekend.
- ¸Ó¸®°¡ ¾ÆÇÁ°Å³ª ¿ÀÌ ³¯ ¶§ ÀÌ ¾àÀ» µå¼¼¿ä.
=> Take this medicine when you have either a headache or a temperature.

=> I want to learn karate or tae kwon do or hapkido.

=> During the vacation, I plan to visit Korea or Japan.

This ending is used in casual and intimate conversation. It is a question when spoken with a rising tone and a statement when spoken with a level tone.

=> Won't you go out with me tomorrow?
- »ê¿¡ °°ÀÌ ¿Ã¶ó °¥·¡¿ä?
=> Will you climb the mountain with me?

=> Are you going to eat now?
- ¾È ¸ÔÀ»·¡.
=> I'm not going to eat.

This construction asks for permission in an informal and casual way.

=> May I ask you in Korean?

=> Yes, go ahead.
- Áö±Ý Áý¿¡ °¡µµ µÅ¿ä?
=> May I go home now?
°¡µµ µÅ¿ä.
=> Yes, you may.
¾Æ´Ï¿À, °¡¸é ¾È µÅ¿ä.
=> No, you may not.
- ¼÷Á¦¸¦ ³»ÀϱîÁö ³»µµ µÅ¿ä?
=> Is it okay to turn in my homework tomorrow?

=> Yes, it's okay.

=> May I write my report with a pencil?

=> You may not write with a pencil.
ÆæÀ¸·Î ½á¾ß µÅ¿ä.
=> You have to write in ink.
Notice the differences in the positive and negative answers:
- -(¾î/¾Æ)µµ µÅ¿ä?
=> "Is it all right to . . . ?"
- ³×, . . . -(¾î/¾Æ)µµ µÅ¿ä.
=> "Yes, it's all right . . ."
- ³×, -(¾î/¾Æ)µµ ±¦Âú¾Æ¿ä/ÁÁ¾Æ¿ä.
=> "Yes, it is fine."
- ¾Æ´Ï¿À, . . . -(À¸)¸é ¾È µÅ¿ä.
=> "No, (one) must not . . . ," "it should not . . . ,"

This sentence ending expresses the speaker's opinion and often translates into "I think .
. ." in English.

- ³»°¡ ¹äÀ» ³Ê¹« ¸¹ÀÌ ¸ÔÀº °Í °°±º¿ä.

=> It looked as though it rained a lot.
- °ð ºñ°¡ ¿Ã °Í °°¾Æ¿ä.
=> It looks as though it's going to rain soon.
