Note: Nominalizer ¤±/À½ "to do/be," "-ing"

This construction makes a verb into a noun, as a gerund ("-ing") does in English. For example, ½Î¿ì´Ù "to fight" becomes ½Î¿ò "fighting," and ³¡³ª´Ù "to finish" becomes ³¡³² "the ending." These nouns are used only in certain contexts, however. They are used as the subject of intransitive verbs, such as ÇÊ¿äÇÏ´Ù "to need," Áß¿äÇÏ´Ù "to be important," ÀÖ´Ù "to exist," and ¾ø´Ù "to not exist." They also are used as the direct object of transitive verbs, as º¸´Ù "to see," ã´Ù "to find," ¾Ë´Ù "to know," and »ý°¢ÇÏ´Ù "to think." (See L15, GN1 for a comparison with the nominalizer -±â.) Note that some verb-derived words have become regular nouns, such as Àá "sleep," Ãã "dance," ±â»Ý "joy," and ¾Æ¸§´Ù¿ò "beauty."

As a subject

  • ½ÃÇè ÁÖ¿¡´Â ÀáÀÌ ¸ðÀÚ¶ó¿ä.
=> I lack sleep during exam week.
  • Çѱ¹¾î Ã¥À» Àд µ¥¿¡ ¾î·Á¿òÀÌ ¾ø´Ù.
