A.V. + (¾î/¾Æ) µÎ´Ù

=> "...and keep"

Like other helping verbs, such as -º¸´Ù, -¹ö¸®´Ù, and -³õ´Ù, -(¾î/¾Æ)µÎ´Ù "to keep/put away" is combined with another verb to indicate the "preservation" of the result of the main verb action, often for a future use. (See the helping verbs chart in L14, GN7

  • ºÁ µÎ´Ù 
    => "to see and keep the knowledge (for future use)"
  • ¹è¿ö µÎ´Ù 
    => "to learn and keep the skill (for future use)"
  • ¸Ô¾î µÎ´Ù 
    => "to eat (in anticipation of . . .)"
  • »ç µÎ´Ù 
    => "to buy and keep"


  • À̻簥 ¾ÆÆÄÆ®¸¦ ºÁ µÎ¾î¾ß°Ú´Ù. 
    => I must go and see the apartment that I'll be moving to (to prepare it).
  • ¹è°¡ ¾È °íÆÍÁö¸¸ ¹äÀ» ¸Ô¾î µ×´Ù. 
    => I wasn't hungry, but I ate a meal (so I would not be hungry later on).
  • ÁÖÀ¯¼Ò¿¡ °¡¼­ Â÷¿¡ ±â¸§À» ¸¹ÀÌ ³Ö¾î µÎ¾ú´Ù. 
    => I went to a gas station and filled up the tank (so I would not run out of gas).
  • °í±¸¸¶¸¦ ¸¹ÀÌ ½É¾î µÎ¾ú´Ù. 
    => They planted a great many yams (to harvest later).
  • ¿©ÇàÀ» °¡·Á°í µ·À» ¸ð¾Æ µ×´Ù. 
    => I saved money to make a trip.
  • Ä£±¸ »ýÀÏ¿¡ ÁÖ·Á°í ¼±¹°À» »ç µ×´Ù. 
    => I bought a gift (and saved it) for my friend's birthday.

2.   A.V. + (¾î/¾Æ) ´ë´Ù
=> "to keep on doing," "to do repeatedly"

This helping verb indicates a continuing or repeated action. (See the helping verb chart in L14, GN7.)

  • ³ó´ãÀ» ÇÏ°í ¿ô¾î ´í´Ù. 
    => They joked and kept laughing.
  • »ç¶÷µéÀÌ ¶°µé¾î ´ò´Ù. 
    => The people talked loudly on and on. 
  • ¾ÆÀ̵éÀÌ ½ºÅ° °¡ÀÚ°í Á¹¶ó ´ò´Ù. 
    => The children begged on and on to go skiing.

3.  a.  V. + ¾ú/¾Ò´ø

=> "used to do," "was doing. . ."

b.  N. + (ÀÌ)¾ú´ø

=> "used to be"

This verbal modifier indicates an activity that was performed habitually in the past or was uncompleted.

(a) 

  • ³»°¡ »ý°¢Çß´ø ¹®Á¦°¡ ÇØ°áµÆ´Ù. 
    => The problem I was thinking about was solved. 
  • ³»°¡ ´Ù³æ´ø ÃʵîÇб³°¡ ¹®À» ´Ý¾Ò´Ù. 
    => The primary school I used to attend is closed.
  • ¾î·ÈÀ» ¶§ Àоú´ø Ã¥À» ´Ù½Ã Àоú´Ù. 
    => I read again the book I used to read when I was young.

(b) 

  • È­»êÀ̾ú´ø »êÀº Áö±Ýµµ °¡²û ¿¬±â°¡ ³­´Ù. 
    => Former volcanic mountains still make smoke sometimes.
  • ´ëÅë·ÉÀ̾ú´ø »ç¶÷ÀÌ Áö±ÝÀº ³óºÎ°¡ µÆ´Ù. 
    => The one who used be the president is now a farmer.
  • ÇØ³à¿´´ø ¿©ÀÚÀ̱⠶§¹®¿¡ ¼ö¿µÀ» ÀßÇÑ´Ù. 
    => Because she used to be a sea diver, she is very good at swimming.

4.  a.  V. + ¤©/À» »Ó¸¸ ¾Æ´Ï¶ó

=> "not only . . . but also," "as well as"

b.  N. + »Ó¸¸ ¾Æ´Ï¶ó

=> "not only N. but also N. . ."

N. + µµ

=> "not only N. but also N. . ."

This pattern indicates that both nouns or noun phrases of the sentence are of equal importance. 

(a)

  • ÀÌ ³ª¶ó´Â ½Ä¹°ÀÌ ´Ù¸¦ »Ó¸¸ ¾Æ´Ï¶ó µ¿¹°µµ ´Ù¸£´Ù. 
    => Not only the plants but also the animals are different in this country.
  • ¼Ò¼³À» ÀÐÀ» »Ó¸¸ ¾Æ´Ï¶ó ¸¸È­Ã¥µµ ÁÁ¾ÆÇÑ´Ù. 
    => She not only reads novels but also likes comic books.

(b)

  • Çлý»Ó¸¸ ¾Æ´Ï¶ó ¼±»ý´Ôµµ ¾à¼ÓÀ» ±ôºý Àؾú´Ù. 
    => Not only the student but the teacher also forgot the appointment.
  • Á¦ÁÖµµ»Ó¸¸ ¾Æ´Ï¶ó ÇÏ¿ÍÀ̵µ °¡ºÃ´Ù. 
    => I have been not only to Cheju Island but also to Hawaii.

5.  a.   ÇÒ ¼ö ¾øÀÌ . . . 

=> "having no choice," "without an alternative"

b.  ÇÒ ¼ö ¾ø´Ù

=> "can't help it," "can't do"

This expression is usually preceded by a clause with -(¾î/¾Æ)¼­, -Áö¸¸, -(À¸)¹Ç·Î, or ¾î/¾Æµµ. When it has no connected clause, it is preceded by ±×·¡¼­ "so," " therefore." 

(a)

  • Áý¿¡ ¸ÔÀ»°Ô Çϳªµµ ¾ø¾î¼­ ÇÒ ¼ö ¾øÀÌ ¶ó¸éÀ» ²ú¿© ¸Ô¾ú¾î¿ä. 
    => Because there was nothing else to eat in the house, I had no choice but to boil and eat noodles. 
  • ºñÇà±âÇ¥°¡ ¸ÅÁøµÇ¾î ÇÒ ¼ö ¾øÀÌ ±âÂ÷·Î °¡¾ß Çß´Ù. 
    => Since the plane tickets were sold out, I had no choice but to take the train.
  • ¾îÁ¦ Â÷°¡ °íÀå³µ´Ù. ±×·¡¼­ ÇÒ ¼ö ¾øÀÌ Áý¿¡±îÁö °É¾î°¬´Ù. 
    => The car broke down yesterday. Therefore I had no choice but to walk home.

(b)

  • µµ¿Í µå¸®°í´Â ½ÍÁö¸¸ Áö±ÝÀº ³Ê¹« ¹Ùºü¼­ ÇÒ ¼ö ¾ø°Ú¾î¿ä. 
    => I would like to help you, but I am so busy that I cannot.
  • ½ÅÈ¥¿©ÇàÀ» ¸ø °¡µµ ÇÒ ¼ö ¾ø¾î¿ä. 
    => If we are not able to go on a honeymoon, we cannot help it.

6.  V. + °Ô µÇ´Ù

=> "it turns out that," "it happens that," "it becomes that"

This expression indicates that an action or an event takes place without the actor's or subject's volition. It is often preceded by an explanatory or causal clause -(¾î/¾Æ)¼­, -±â ¶§¹®¿¡, as shown in the examples:

  • Á÷Çà Ç¥°¡ ¸ÅÁø µÅ¼­ ºÎ»êÀ» °æÀ¯Çؼ­ Á¦ÁÖµµ¿¡ °¡°Ô µÆ´Ù. 
    => Since the nonstop tickets were sold out, it turned out that we had to go to Cheju via Pusan. 
  • Á¦ÁÖµµ¿¡ °¬´Ù°¡ ¼ÒÇǸ¦ ¸¸³ª°Ô µÆ´Ù. 
    => I happened to meet Sophie while in Cheju.
  • Ä£±¸¸¦ ÅëÇØ ¼¢¸ÞÀ̸¦ ¾Ë°Ô µÆ´Ù. 
    => I've gotten to know Shanmei through a friend.
  • ÀÒ¾î¹ö¸° Áö°©À» ã°Ô µÆ´Ù. 
    => I have gotten my purse back.
  • µ·À» ºô·Á Â÷¸¦ »ç°Ô µÆ´Ù. 
    => It turned out that I can borrow money and buy a car.
