Verbs for involuntary action: µé´Ù, °É¸®´Ù, and ³ª´Ù

Many body-related functions are treated as involuntary or noncontrollable acts and are expressed by µé´Ù "come under," ³ª´Ù "arise," or °É¸®´Ù "be caught." ¡¡

2.  Question ending  -´ÙÁö¿ä?
=> "isn't it . . . ?"

As an indirect question ending, -´ÙÁö¿ä expresses something close to "don't I hear/don't they say . . . ?," as in Áö±Ý ´º¿å¿¡ ºñ°¡ ¿Â´ÙÁö¿ä? "Don't they say it's raining now in New York City?"

=> "don't/didn't I hear . . . ?"

  • ±× ºÐÀº ¿ÀÆä¶ó¸¦ ÁÁ¾ÆÇÑ´ÙÁö¿ä? 
    => Don't they say that he likes opera?
  • ³Ê´Â ¹ú½á Ç¥¸¦ »ò´ÙÁö? 
    => Didn't I hear you bought the ticket already?
  • ±× ºÐÀÌ ´ëÅë·É¿¡ ´ç¼±µÆ´ÙÁö? 
    => Didn't I hear that he was elected president?

  • ³»ÀÏÀÌ µ¶¸³ ±â³äÀÏÀ̶óÁö¿ä? 
    => Don't they say it's Independence Day tomorrow?

3.  A.V. + ¤©/À» °É ±×·¨´Ù

=> "should have . . ."

This short form of -¤©/À» °ÍÀ» ±×·¨´Ù indicates mild regret, as in "I should have done . . ."

  • °°ÀÌ °¡ÀÚ°í ÇÒ °É ±×·¨´Ù. 
    => I should have asked her/him to go with me.
  • Á¡½ÉÀ» ¹Ì¸® ¸ÔÀ» °É ±×·¨´Ù. 
    => I should have eaten lunch earlier.
  • ¶±±¹À» ²úÀÏ °É ±×·¨´Ù. 
    => I should have cooked (boiled) the rice-cake soup.

4.  V. + (¾î/¾Æ) ºÃÀÚ/º¸¾ÒÀÚ

=> "even if (I try) doing . . . ," "even if (something) is . . ."

This connective indicates the speaker's supposition of the fact or the event.¡¡

  • Áö±Ý ÈÄÈ¸ÇØ ºÃÀÚ ¼Ò¿ë¾ø¾î. 
    => Even if you are remorseful, it its of no use. / There is no point in being remorseful now.
  • ¶Ù¾î ºÃÀÚ ¹ö½º¸¦ Àâ±â´Â Èûµé°É. 
    => It'll be hard to catch the bus even if you run. 
  • ´©±¸¿¡°Ô ÀdzíÇØ º¸¾ÒÀÚ ´Ù¸¥ ÁÁÀº ¼ö°¡ ¾øÀ» °Í °°´Ù. 
    => Even if you discuss it with someone, there won't be any good solution.
  • »ç¶÷ÀÌ Å°°¡ Ä¿ ºÃÀÚ 7 ÇÇÆ®µµ ¾È µÉ °Å´Ù. 
    => Even if a man is tall, he is probably less than seven feet.

5.  A.V. + (À¸)³ª ¸¶³ª

=> "no use," "no point doing," "not worth doing"

This pattern indicates a futile attempt or uselessness, meaning literally "whether to do it or not."

  • °¡³ª ¸¶³ª ¿ì¸®´Â ´Ê¾î¼­ ±× ¿µÈ­´Â ¸ø ºÁ.
    => There is no use going; we can't see the movie because we're late. 
  • ±× ¾àÀº ¸ÔÀ¸³ª ¸¶³ª¿´´Ù. 
    => The medicine was no use. It didn't help.
  • °æÁÖ¿¡°Ô ¸»Çغ¸³ª ¸¶³ª ¾È °£´Ù°í ÇÒ °Å¾ß.
    => There is no point asking Kyungju; she'll say she won't go.

6.  A.V. + ¤©/À» Áö°æÀÌ´Ù

=> "to/at the point of . . . ," "almost," "nearly"

This expression is often preceded by a verb of hardship, such as Æ÷±âÇÏ´Ù, ¾²·¯Áö´Ù, Á×´Ù, ¿ï´Ù, ²ª¾îÁö´Ù, or ³Ñ¾î Áö´Ù.¡¡

  • ½ÃÇèÀÌ ³Ê¹« ¾î·Á¿ö ¿ï Áö°æÀ̾ú´Ù. 
    => The exam was so difficult that I almost cried.
  • ÇǰïÇØ¼­ ¾²·¯Áú Áö°æÀÌ´Ù. 
    => I am so tired that I'm about to collapse.
  • ¸ñÀÌ ¸»¶ó¼­ Á×À» Áö°æÀ̾ú´Ù. 
    => I almost died of thirst.
