( Patterns and Grammar Notes )

 

1.  Various uses of  V. + °Ô 

-°Ô is used to make an adverb from a descriptive verb, as in ½±°Ô "easily," or to connect two verbs to indicate a certain aspect of the sentences, as in -°Ô µÇ´Ù, -°Ô ÇÏ´Ù, -°Ô ¸¶·ÃÀÌ´Ù, and -°Ô ½ÃŰ´Ù. (See L23, GN2 and L25, GN2.)


a.  D.V. + °Ô

=> "-ly" (adverb)

b. V. + °Ô µÇ´Ù

=> "to turn out," "to become," "to get to"

c. V. + °Ô ÇÏ´Ù/¸¸µé´Ù

=> "to make (someone) do (something)"

d. V. + °Ô ¸¶·ÃÀÌ´Ù

=> "it's expected," "it's (only) natural"


(a)

  • ÀüÀÚ Á¦Ç°ÀÌ ´Ù¾çÇÏ°Ô Àü½ÃµÆ´Ù. 
    => Electrical items were displayed variously.
  • ±× ¾ÆÀ̰¡ ±Í¿±°Ô ¿ô´Â´Ù. 
    => He has a cute smile. (Literally: He smiles cutely.)
  • °øÁÖ´Â ½½ÇÁ°Ô ¿ï¾ú´Ù. 
    => The princess wept sadly.

Some other examples are ÀÌ·¸°Ô, ¾î¶»°Ô, ½Î°Ô, ¹Ý°©°Ô, ¹«¼·°Ô, ±ÞÇϰÔ, and ¸øÁö ¾Ê°Ô. 

(b)

  • ±× Ä£±¸¸¦ ¾Ë°Ô µÇ¾ú´Ù. 
    => I got to know him/her.
  • ³ª´Â ºÎ»ê¿¡ °¡°Ô µÇ¾ú´Ù. 
    => (It turned out that) I went to Pusan. 
  • ¾ÆÀ̵éÀ» À§Çؼ­ ±× °Ç¹°À» ¼¼¿ì°Ô µÇ¾ú´Ù. 
    => (It turned out that) the building will be built for children.

(c)

  • ±×³à´Â »ç¶÷µéÀ» ³î¶ó°Ô ÇÑ´Ù. 
    => He/She surprises people.
  • Çлýµé¿¡°Ô ¿µ¾î·Î ´ë´äÇÏ°Ô ÇÑ´Ù. 
    => I make students respond in Korean.
  • ±â´Ù¸®°Ô ÇØ¼­ Á˼ÛÇØ¿ä. 
    => I am sorry that I made you wait.

(d)

  • ÀÌ±ä »ç¶÷ÀÌ ÇÑ ÅÎ ³»°Ô ¸¶·ÃÀ̾ß. 
    => The winner is supposed to treat.
  • µ·ÀÌ ÀÖÀ¸¸é ¾²°Ô ¸¶·ÃÀÌ´Ù. 
    => It's only natural to spend money if one has some.

Note that there is another frequently used -°Ô, which is a colloquial form of -°ÍÀÌ in the ¤¤/´Â/¤©/À» + °ÍÀÌ or the ÀÌ/±×/Àú + °ÍÀÌ expression. 

  • ±×°Ô ¾Æ´Ï¿¡¿ä. 
    => I don't mean that.
  • ÇÒ °Ô ¸¹¾Æ¿ä. 
    => I've a great deal to do.
  • °È´Â °Ô ³´´Ù. 
    => It's better to walk.
  • À̰ÍÂëÀº ¾Ë¾ÆµÎ´Â °Ô ÁÁ¾Æ. 
    => It's good to know at least this.
  • Âù °Å ¸¶½Ç °Ô ¾ø¾î¿ä. 
    => There isn't anything cold to drink.

2.  Supposition, guess, and intention -°Ú

-°Ú not only indicates a future action but also indicates a supposition, guess, or intention. In many cases, it closely resembles -À»/¸¦ °ÍÀÌ´Ù. ¡¡

  • ¿ÀÈÄ 2½Ã´Ï±î ÆíÁö°¡ ¿Ô°Ú´Ù. 
    => Since it's 2:00 P.M., the mail must have arrived. (guess)
  • ³ª´Â ³»ÀÏ ¹Ì±¹À¸·Î ¶°³ª°Ú´Ù. 
    => I will leave for the United States tomorrow. (intention)

-°Ú is often used with -(À¸)¸é to indicate a wish or a hope, as in -(À¸)¸é ÁÁ°Ú´Ù "it would be nice if..." or "I wish it would/were..." and in -(À¸)¸é ÁÁ¾Ò°Ú´Ù "it would have been nice if..."

  • ºñ°¡ ¸¹ÀÌ ¿ÔÀ¸¸é ÁÁ°Ú´Ù. 
    => I wish it would rain a lot. 
  • ¾î´ðÅͰ¡ µû¶ó¿ÔÀ¸¸é ÁÁ¾Ò°Ú´Ù. 
    => It would've been nice if an adapter had come with it.
  • ³» Â÷°¡ °íÀåÀÌ ¾È ³µ¾úÀ¸¸é ÁÁ¾Ò°Ú´Âµ¥. 
    => It would've been nice if my car hadn't broken down.
  • ³» ÇÁ¸°ÅͰ¡ °íÀåÀÌ ¾È ³ª¸é ÁÁ°Ú´Ù. 
    => I wish my printer wouldn't break down.

3.  a.  V. + ¤¤/Àº/´Â ¼ÀÀÌ´Ù

=> "it is (almost) as though," "I would say..." 

b.  A.V. + ¤©/À» ¼ÀÀÌ´Ù

=> "(one) plans to," "(one) intends to" 

-¤¤/Àº/´Â ¼ÀÀÌ´Ù indicates a calculated result and is a colloquial expression. -¤©/À» ¼ÀÀÌ´Ù indicates an intention or a plan.¡¡

(a)

  • ºñ½Î°Ô »ê ¼ÀÀÌ´Ù. 
    => (It's almost as though) we paid too much.
  • ÀÌ ¾ÆÆÄÆ®´Â °ª¿¡ ºñÇØ ³ÐÀº ¼ÀÀÌ´Ù. 
    => (I'd say) this apartment is large, considering the price.
  • ¸ÅÀÏ Çб³¿¡ °¡´Â ¼ÀÀÌ´Ù. 
    => It's almost as though I go to school every day.

(b)

  • ³ª´Â ¿ÀÀü Áß¿¡ µ¹¾Æ ¿Ã ¼ÀÀ̾ú´Ù. 
    => I was planning on coming back before noon.
  • ³Ê ¾ÕÀ¸·Î ¾î¶»°Ô ÇÒ ¼ÀÀ̾ß? 
    => What are you planning to do from now on? 
  • ³ª¸¦ ¹Ùº¸ ¸¸µé ¼ÀÀ̳Ä? 
    => Are you going to make a fool of me?

4.  Construction with -´Ù°¡ 
a.  V. + ´Ù°¡

=> "while doing," "as (something) is going on" 

b.  V. + ¾ú/¾Ò´Ù°¡

=> "while/when," "and then" 

These connectives indicate an interrupted action followed by another action. The actor of both actions is usually the same. There are some exceptions¡ªfor example, ºñ°¡ ¿À´Ù°¡ ÇØ°¡ ³µ´Ù "It was raining, and then the sun came out." ¡¡

(a)

  • ±æÀ» °¡´Ù°¡ Ä£±¸¸¦ ¸¸³µ¾î¿ä. 
    => On my way, I met a friend.
  • ÀÌ ±æ·Î ¶È¹Ù·Î °¡´Ù°¡ ¿ÞÂÊÀ¸·Î °¡¼¼¿ä. 
    => Go straight this way, and then go left.

(b)

  • ²°´Ù°¡ ´Ù½Ã ÄѺ¸¸é ¾î¶³±î¿ä? 
    => How about turning it off and then turning it on?
  • ¿ÊÀ» ÀÔ¾ú´Ù°¡ ´Ù¸¥ ¿ÊÀ¸·Î °¥¾Æ ÀÔ¾ú¾î¿ä. 
    => I wore one set of clothes and then changed into another set.

5.  V. + °í ¸»°í(¿ä)

=> "of course, . . . will be/do," "it goes without saying"

This sentence ending indicates the speaker's willingness to do or his or her complete agreement with a fact. Itis used in a casual or an intimate context.¡¡

  • ¿À´Ã ³¯¾¾°¡ Ãä°í ¸»°í. 
    => It surely is cold today.
  • ¹Ì±¹¿¡ µµÂøÇÏ¸é ÆíÁö¸¦ ¾²°í ¸»°í¿ä. 
    => Of course I'll write to you when I get to the United States.
  • Ä«¸¦·Î½º±ºÀº »ç¶÷ÀÌ ºÎÁö·±ÇÏ°í ¸»°í. 
    => Carlos surely is a diligent fellow.

6.  A.V. + µµ·Ï ÇÏ´Ù

=> "to try to make," "to have someone do"

This pattern indicates an effort "to make something happen" or "to have someone do something."¡¡

  • ÀÌÆ² ³»¿¡ °íÃÄ µå¸®µµ·Ï ÇϰڽÀ´Ï´Ù. 
    => I'll try to repair it within two days.
  • ÀÌÆ² ³»¿¡ ´©°¡ °íÃÄ µå¸®µµ·Ï ÇÏÁö¿ä. 
    => I'll have someone repair it in two days.
  • Àü±â¸¦ ¾Æ²¸ ¾²µµ·Ï ÇϰڽÀ´Ï´Ù. 
    => I'll try to save electricity.
  • »ç¶÷µé¿¡°Ô Àü±â¸¦ ¾Æ²¸ ¾²µµ·Ï ÇϰڽÀ´Ï´Ù. 
    => I'll make people thrifty with electricity.
  • ÃֽŠÁ¦Ç°µéÀ» Àü½ÃÇϵµ·Ï Çß½À´Ï´Ù. 
    => I tried to display the latest products.
  • »ç¿øÀÌ Á¦Ç°µéÀ» Àü½ÃÇϵµ·Ï Çß½À´Ï´Ù. 
    => I had an employee display the items.
  • ¼³¸í¼­¸¦ ´Ù Àеµ·Ï ÇϰڽÀ´Ï´Ù. 
    => I'll try to read all the instructions.
  • ÇлýµéÀÌ ¼³¸í¼­¸¦ Àеµ·Ï ÇϰڽÀ´Ï´Ù. 
    => I'll try to have the students read the instructions.
