1.  A.V. + ¤©/À»±î ÇÏ´Ù°¡

=> "considered doing . . . but . . . ," "was going to . . . then . . ."

-¤©/À»±î ÇÏ´Ù°¡ is the combination of -¤©/À»±î "consider doing" and -ÇÏ´Ù°¡ (interrupted action) and indicates that one considers doing one thing then changes to doing something else.

  • »ç¾çÇÒ±î ÇÏ´Ù°¡ ÇØ º¸±â·Î Çß´Ù. 
    => I was going to decline but decided to try. 
  • Çѱ¹ À½½ÄÀ» ½Ãų±î ÇÏ´Ù°¡ Áß±¹ À½½ÄÀ» ½ÃÄ×´Ù. 
    => I was going to order Korean food but then ordered Chinese.
  • ºñÇà±â¸¦ Å»±î ÇÏ´Ù°¡ ±âÂ÷ ÆíÀ» ÀÌ¿ëÇϱâ·Î Çß´Ù. 
    => I was considering the airplane but decided to take the train.
  • ¸Ó¸®°¡ ¾ÆÆÄ¼­ Áý¿¡¼­ ½¯±î ÇÏ´Ù°¡ µµ¼­°ü¿¡ ¿Ô´Ù. 
    => I was going to rest at home because of my headache but came to the library.

2.  a.  A.V. + ´ø ÂüÀÌ´Ù/Â÷ÀÌ´Ù 

=> "(I am) in the middle of doing/being . . ." 

b.  A.V. + ´ø Âü¿¡

=> "in the middle of doing"

As a colloquial expression, -´ø ÂüÀÌ´Ù indicates that "I am in the middle of an action" and that usually some other action follows. -´ø Âü¿¡ indicates that, in addition to "in the middle of an action," it is an opportune moment.

    => What are you doing? 
  • ¹ø¿ªÇÏ´ø Âü¾ß. 
    => I am (in the middle of) translating.
  • ¾îµð °¡¿ä? 
    => Where are you going?
  • °úÀå´Ô²² ¼­·ù¸¦ ÀüÇØ µå¸®·¯ °¡´ø ÂüÀÌ¿¡¿ä. 
    => I was just on my way to deliver the paper to the manager.
(b)
  • ¹è°íÇÁ´ø Âü¿¡ Àß µÆ´Ù. ¸ÔÀ¸·¯ °¡ÀÚ. 
    => Great! I am (in the middle of being) hungry. Let's go eat.
  • °úÀå´Ô²² ¼­·ù¸¦ ÀüÇØ µå¸®·¯ °¡´ø Âü¿¡ °úÀå´ÔÀ» º¹µµ¿¡¼­ ¸¸³µ´Ù. 
    => On my way to deliver the paper to the manager, I ran into her in the hallway.

A more often used pattern is -·Á´ø ÂüÀÌ´Ù or -·Á´ø Âü¿¡, which indicates that one is just about to do one thing when something else happens. 

  • ¹ö½º¸¦ Ÿ·Á´ø Âü¿¡ ±×¸¦ ¸¸³µ´Ù. 
    => As I was just about to get on the bus, I met him.
  • ¾È ±×·¡µµ ÀüÈ­ÇÏ·Á´ø ÂüÀ̾ú¾î. 
    => I was just about to call you anyway.

3.  V. + ¤¤/Àº/´Â µ¥´Ù°¡

=> "in addition to," "not only . . . but also," "and also"

This connective is composed of the -´Âµ¥ connective followed by -´Ù°¡.¡¡

  • ¹°°¡°¡ ¿À¸¥ µ¥´Ù°¡ ȯÀ²µµ ¿Ã¶ú´Ù. 
    => The prices have gone up, and the exchange rate has also gone up. 
  • Ã¥µµ ¸¹ÀÌ Àд µ¥´Ù°¡ ¿îµ¿µµ ¿­½ÉÈ÷ ÇÑ´Ù. 
    => Not only does she read many books, but she exercises diligently.
  • ÀçÁÖµµ ¸¹Àº µ¥´Ù°¡ ¼º°Ýµµ ÁÁ´Ù. 
    => Not only is he talented, but he has a good personality.

4.  V. + ±â¸¦ ¹Ù¶ó´Ù 

=> "to wish," "to pray for," "to hope for"

This expression indicates a simple wish, desire, or hope.¡¡

  • ³×, ±×·¯±â¸¦ ¹Ù¶ø´Ï´Ù. 
    => Yes, I wish it would be so.
  • »ç¾÷ÀÌ Àß µÇ±â¸¦ ¹Ù·¡¿ä. 
    => I pray your business will do well.
  • ±× Ä£±¸¿Í Àß Áö³»±â¸¦ ¹Ù·¡. 
    => I hope you get along well with your friend. 
  • ¼±¹°·Î »ç ÁØ Ã¥À» Àç¹ÌÀÖ°Ô Àб⸦ ¹Ù¶ø´Ï´Ù. 
    => I hope you will enjoy the book given to you as a gift.

5.  V. + ¤©/À» ¼ö¹Û¿¡ ¾ø´Ù

=> "there is no way/choice but to . . . ," "have to"


  • °¡°ÝÀ» ³ôÀÏ ¼ö¹Û¿¡ ¾ø´Ù. 
    => There is no way but to raise the price.
  • ÇÒ °Ô ³Ê¹« ¸¹¾Æ¼­ ¹ãÀ» »õ¿ï ¼ö¹Û¿¡ ¾ø°Ú¾î¿ä. 
    => There is so much to do, I have no choice but to stay up all night.
  • µ·À» Àý¾àÇÒ ¼ö¹Û¿¡ ¾ø¾ú´Ù. 
    => I had to be frugal with money.
  • ½ÈÁö¸¸ Ä¡°ú¿¡ °¡´Â ¼ö¹Û¿¡ ¾ø´Ù. 
    => I hate it, but there's no way but to go to a dentist.

6.  N. phrase or clause + À»/¸¦ ½ÃŰ´Ù

=> "to make (someone) do . . . ," "to order"

The verb ½ÃŰ´Ù is used in two ways: as a causative verb, it makes someone do something, and as a verb, it means "to order" in a restaurant. In the former sense, it is generally used with verbs that end in -ÇÏ´Ù, as in ÀÌÇØ(¸¦) ÇÏ´Ù, °øºÎ(¸¦) ÇÏ´Ù, ÀÔÇÐ(À») ÇÏ´Ù, ¼÷Á¦(¸¦) ÇÏ´Ù, û¼Ò(¸¦) ÇÏ´Ù, or °ÆÁ¤(À») ÇÏ´Ù. Not all -ÇÏ´Ù verbs can be used with ½ÃŰ´Ù¡ªfor example, º¯ÇÏ´Ù or ¸ÁÇÏ´Ù.¡¡


a. "to make someone do something"
  • ¹®Á¦¸¦ ÀÌÇØ½ÃÄ×´Ù. 
    => I made him understand the problem.
  • µ¿»ýÀ» ½ÃÄѼ­ µµ¼­°ü¿¡¼­ Ã¥À» ºô·Á ¿Ô´Ù. 
    => I borrowed books by sending my younger brother to the library. 
  • µ¿»ý¿¡°Ô ½ÉºÎ¸§À» ½ÃÄ×´Ù. 
    => I sent him on an errand.
  • ±³½Ç¿¡¼­ ¸» ½ÃŰÁö ¸¶. 
    => Don't make me talk in the classroom.

b. "to order"

  • ³ª´Â ³ÃÄ¿ÇǸ¦ ½ÃÄ×´Ù. 
    => I ordered an iced coffee.
  • ÇÇÀÚ ÀÏÀκÐÇÏ°í ½ºÆÄ°ÔƼ ÀÌÀκÐÀ» ½ÃŰÀÚ. 
    => Let's order pizza for one and spaghetti for two.
