When a sentence focuses on the direct object, i.e. the receiver of the action, the OBJECT is marked by ANG and the ACTOR is marked by NG.
Formation of Verb Roots with the Object focus affix “-IN”
To form the Infinitive…
1. for verb roots that end in a consonant sound, which includes the final glottal stop (‘),
-IN is simply suffixed to the root.
gamit + IN …gamitin…to use
hanap + IN …hanapin…to look for
hati’ + IN….hati’in…to split
hiwa’ + IN…hiwa’in…to slice
2. for verb roots whose final syllable contains an “o”:
The “o” turns into “u” and the –IN is suffixed.
Abot à Abut… à Abutin ‘to reach’
Tapos à Tapus… à Tapusin ‘to finish’
Tuyo à Tuyu’… à Tuyuin ‘to dry’
Note: this change from final “o” to “u” only occurs when a suffix follows it.
Tapusin ‘to finish’ (infinitive) BUT Tinapos ‘finished’ (completed aspect)
3. for verb roots that end in a vowel sound (excluding the glottal stop /’/),
the consonant ‘h’ follows the vowel sound, and the –IN is affixed. adding the h after the vowel final root and before the –in affix is a way of maintaining the Consonant–Vowel–Consonant alternation common to Filipino word formation.
Bisita à bisitah… à bisitahin ‘to visit’
Basa à basah… à basahin ‘to read
