BALARILA:

Grammatical Point I:  Gusto or Ayaw plus a Noun.

To like or dislike something (Noun)
When one expresses liking, wanting, or disliking something,
The actor of Gusto/Ayaw (i.e., the one who likes/dislikes) is always in the NG form, or is marked by NG.  Gusto ni Lina….Ayaw ni Bert…  Gusto ng mga estudyante…  Ayaw ko.    Ayaw nila.

The NG Pronouns and Markers are as follows:

PRONOUNS            Singular            Plural                Notes on the Plural form:

1st person            ko                     natin                 (natin- inclusive, including the person addressed,                                                                                                   I/Me and you and possibly others)
namin                (namin -exclusive, excluding the person addressed,                                                                                                  I/Me and other/s, excluding you)
2nd person                  mo                    ninyo                (ninyo - also used for “you” with respect, with elders)
3rd person           niya                  nila                   (nila also used for singular person with implied “other/s”)

MARKERS:            Singular            Plural

ng                        ng mga                  (ng mga - also used for singular person with implied “other/s”)
ni                        nina                        (nina - also used for singular person with implied “other/s”)

  • If the object of one’s liking or disliking is an inanimate noun (e.g. I like noodles) the noun will be preceded by a marker:  ang or ng

Gusto nila ang pansit.  They like the noodles.
Gusto namin ng pansit.  We want noodles.
Ayaw ni Mariella ng biskuwit.   Mariella does not like cookies.

  • If the object of one’s liking or disliking is an animate noun expressed as a proper name,  (e.g. I like David) the proper name will be preceded by the marker si or sina.

                        Gusto ko si David
Gusto ko sina David (at Richie).

  • If the object of one’s like or disliking is an pronoun (I like them),  the “ng” pronoun is used.

Gusto ko sila.  (I like them)
Gusto ko siya (I like him / her)
Gusto ko kayo. (I like you, plural)
                        Ayaw ko siya.  (I don’t like him/her)

  • Exception: Gusto kita (I like you).  [“kita” is a pronoun expressing ko + ka  in which the first person singular “I” is the ‘actor’ and the second person singular “you” is the object of the sentence]
  • There are other ways of expressing likes and dislikes which may be material for  second level.              E.g. May gusto ako kay Jim.  Ayaw ko sa kanila.   Nagustuhan ko ang palabas.  (I “like” (am interested in) Jim.  I don’t like them.    And I liked the show.)
