Periods of time:

taon – year                                                oras – hour, time           
buwan – month                                                minuto  – minute
linggo – week                                                sandali – minute, moment
araw – day                                                katapusan – end (of the month)
                                                            a-primero – 1st (of the month)

 

Telling time:

Anong oras na?  What time is it?
Anong oras ang miting?  What time is the meeting?

There are two ways of responding.  The Spanish derived form is more frequently used.
The Filipino form is more formal and more often encountered in public speeches, radio stations…

Two o’clock in the afternoon is expressed as:   Ika-dalawa ng hapon   OR   Alas-dos ng hapon
Note the prefix “ika-” is used for Filipino numbers, and “alas” for Spanish-borrowed numbers.
Not the prefix for one o’clock:  Ala una.

Quarter past the hour – “y kuwarto”

1:15 – Ala una’y kuwarto            4:30  Alas kuwatro’y kuwarto    2:15 Alas dos y kuwarto

Half past the hour -  “y medya”
