BALARILA:

Simply stated, a Filipino sentence consists of a Predicate and a Subject. The predicate contains information or comment about the subject.  The subject is the topic of the sentence.  An English sentence likewise has a subject and predicate.  However in Filipino, unlike in English, the predicate precedes the subject.

Compare:              Maganda ang mga bulaklak.
                        beautiful-(are)-flowers
                        The flowers a beautiful

In the above sentence, the predicate “maganda” (beautiful) has the role or function of “adjective” whereas the subject “mga bulaklak” (flowers) has the function of “noun.”  Note that the subject is marked by “ang” or a form of it.

A subject can also be an adjective:
Maganda ang matangkad.   beautiful –(is)-the tall one   [The tall one is beautiful]
It can be a verb:
Maganda ang nagmamanehobeautiful-(is)-the one driving  [The one who’s driving is beautiful]
Or a prepositional phrase:
Maganda ang  nasa klasebeautiful (is) the one in class              [The one who’s in class is beautiful]
It can be a pronoun, but a subject pronoun:
Maganda siya.                   beautiful (is) she                [She is beautiful]

The same functions may serve as the predicate of a sentence.  That is:

A predicate can be a noun:
Propesor ang binata.                      professor-(is)-single [The professor is single]
Or an adjective:
Maganda ang mga bulaklak.             beautiful-(is)-flowers            [The flowers are beautiful]
It can be a verb:
Nagmamaneho ang estudyante.            driving-(is)-student            [The student is driving]
Or a prepositional phrase:
Nasa klase ang guro.                 in class-(is)-teacher            [The teacher is in class]
